GED Science Topics
The GED course is undertaken by candidates who did not successfully complete their high school examination. The science section of GED is divided into life, physical and the earth and space sciences.
- LIFE SCIENCE: The life sciences contain topics dealing with the various life forms and all its constituent parts. It gives an overview of the cell by describing and defining it, its structure, composition, and theories associated with it. This helps the student to have a general idea of what a cell is and how important it is to any life form. Another area that is covered in the life sciences is the human body systems. Here, the ten different body systems are deeply explained and their importance in keeping the body alive and healthy emphasized. This helps the learner to understand the human anatomy and how it is influenced by the different systems.The student is also introduced to topics related to DNA, how it functions, its characteristics and location. Here, explanations are given on how genes are inherited from parents and how they present themselves in individual traits. The notion of the Punnett Square and patterns of inheritance are also tackled. Additionally, the topic of evolution and the relationship between population, genetics and the environment are also explained. Moreover, there is a broad description on food chains, trophic levels and food webs and how energy flows between different organisms in an ecosystem. Finally, there is a topic on nutrition which assists the student to learn about the six important nutrients required for energy.
- PHYSICAL SCIENCE: The physical sciences part starts by defining basic terminologies like the Atoms. Molecules, mixtures, compounds and much more. The state of matter in the universe, which includes its solid, liquid and gaseous form is also covered. It also tries to relate the various shapes and volumes found in the different states of matter. This is very important to distinguish their properties and characteristics. Furthermore, chemical reactions and the different types of energy are also presented. There is also a topic that deals with chemical reactions and different types of energy. These chemical reactions are defined and described in detail to enable the learner to understand the processes involved.Newton’s Law of Force and Motion are also presented here to help the student understand the study of kinematics and be able to describe how things move, displace themselves from velocity to acceleration. in this course. The three laws of Newton are clearly described here and this sets the foundations in the understanding of kinematics.
- EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE: The earth and space science sub-discipline introduce the learner to the four spheres of the earth and their locations. It also deals with the earth’s internal layers such as the crust, the mantle, and the core. The course also tackles questions that deal with the different types of plate boundaries that are found on the earth’s surface. It also gives a general perspective of air and water circulation in the atmosphere. This deals with matters such as evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.Furthermore, it also expounds on the differences between weather and climate and their effects. It provides a clear definition of both notions which helps the student to have a firm grasp of the concepts involved relating to climate and the weather. In addition to that, it also shows the relationship between the weather and climate and how both of them are interrelated.
